New Artist: David Porteous-Butler at Affordable Art.

David Porteous-Butler at Affordable Art.
David Porteous-Butler was born in North London in 1945 and his childhood was spent in and around Highgate. He settled in Suffolk in 1978.
David studied in London under the late Sir Kyffin Williams RA and Anthony Green RA before being offered a place at the Royal College of Art. David is truly a protégé of Sir Kyffin Williams RA and remained close to him throughout his life, sharing his fundamental belief that drawing and draughtsmanship are a vital part of the artist’s craft.
Like his mentor, he has a passion for the vitality of the landscape and changing light around him. Suffolk provides much inspiration and the English countryside is a true love, although he has also worked extensively in Southern Europe including time in France and Italy. Working with a limited palette, he is always faithful to the truth in what he sees.
David was one of the artists chosen to paint the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012 and is currently in Australia working on several commissions including painting the Melbourne Cricket Ground during this winter’s Ashes series.
David’s latest paintings are now on display and can be purchased directly from the gallery or by telephone

Trofimov at Affordable Art

Trofimov at Affordable Art
Oleg Trofimov, Russia’s most famous and celebrated living artist, was born in 1962 in Krasnoarmeisk, Russia.
His style is “Russian realism” which is a combination of traditional realism and impressionism. Russian artists that had a major influence on him were Korovonin, Turjanskiy, Korjev, Stojarov and Ukin. He cites the western artists Van Gogh and Monet as his true inspiration.
In the 90’s Oleg’s work was purchased by practically all of the major Russian banks. Important government officials including Presidents Vladimir Putin, Dmitri Medvedev, Mikhail Gorbachev and the late Boris Yeltsin hold his work in their private collections.
Many stars of Russian entertainment including actors, producers and singers are among collectors of his art. Svetlana Medvedeva, wife of the current Prime Minister and owner of two prestigious art galleries in Moscow and Bruges has purchased 16 of Oleg’s paintings over the past few years.
Moscow’s world famous Tretyakov Art Gallery & Museum has recently purchased several of Oleg’s paintings to archive alongside other Russian masters of the last three centuries.
The paintings of Oleg Trofimov are now on display at Affordable Art and can be purchased directly from the gallery or by telephone.

Jigsaw Autumn/Winter 2013

Jigsaw has unveiled their Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, and here you can take a peek into what to expect in store this season.
The collection is defined by rich, autumnal hues and lavish yarns. In classic Jigsaw style, they have strengthened their devotion to British heritage, with colourful tweeds paired with wool jumpers, plaids and tartans, and luxurious silks are combined with chunky knits and cosy coats to keep you comfortable but stylish throughout the winter months.
Model and former Emmerdale actor, Noah Huntley, is the star of the A/W Men’s campaign which features the best of British fabrics, soft velvets, Alpaca wool and washed Harris Tweed. Inspiration for the collection came from Mark Rothko and Sean Scully who invented a new ‘squirrel’ colour – which they designed to be worn in dark shirts, and roll-neck jumpers.

£5,000 Donation for Local Charities

£5,000 Donation for Local Charities
Two local charities have recently benefitted from donations of £2,500 each from a Community Bursary Scheme run by VQ’s owners, Hammerson.
VQ has supported both Yorkshire Cancer Research and The Haven in recent years and were nominated by the centre’s management as recipients for this year’s awards.
Hammerson establishes community bursary schemes for its developments and projects across the country, and each year makes a number of donations to charities in the local communities in which it operates.
VQ Centre Director, John Bade commented, “The Hammerson Local Community Bursary is a great opportunity for the county's charities to be awarded a significant amount of money, which could make a real difference to their work. Having worked with both Yorkshire Cancer Research and The Haven over recent years, we felt the awards would be a proper continuation of our support for the invaluable work they do in our region.”
Alison Troop, Trusts and Communities Fundraiser for The Haven added, “We were delighted to receive the £2,500 donation from the Hammerson Charity Committee. This money will fully fund more than two Visitors through the whole Haven programme, ensuring they receive the full benefits of our care and support.
“Victoria Quarter’s continued involvement with The Haven means so much to us and the women and families who come to us, and will help us to continue to provide care and support for those in Yorkshire trying to cope with the impact of Breast Cancer.”

Ted Baker opens newly refurbished Leeds store

Ted Baker opens newly refurbished #Leeds store
Ted Baker is excited to announce a full refurbishment of his successful Leeds store in the North East of England on 1st November 2013. The 3191 square foot new store design takes inspiration from both owls and wool. The fleece symbolises the historic wool industry throughout Leeds, whilst the owls are taken from the traditional Leeds coat of arms. Ted has combined both inspirations to create a patriotic and intriguing store concept.

The ground floor is divided into four rooms with archways into each area connecting the space. Two of the rooms are dressed with classical décor and house the menswear collections. Old portraits of local architects and dressmakers adorn the walls and their faces replaced with various breeds of owl. The remaining rooms house the Phormal collections, and to the ceiling is a large glass box filled with a life-size flocked sheep, wearing a hat and bow tie. Elastic looms weave through the different rooms, finally joining together on one wall to replicate the production line of cotton.

A traditional staircase leads customers to the first floor with ribbed glass laid onto deep blue & orange wallpaper. The first floor hosts the womenswear collections where on one wall is a large bookcase, which displays highlights of the women’s accessories collection. On the opposite wall, lenticular panels show owls in flight fluttering across the space. A backdrop of laser cut metal panels, cut to replicate large feathers with mirror and fabric infills and swags of fabric voiles run along the window, framing the decadent area. Oval tables with contrasting tops that appear to have been stitched together host the women’s luxurious accessory collections.

The glass top cash desk is filled with cotton reels of thread in various colours, drawing attention to this area of the store; the bottom half is divided into small pigeon holes, with each diagonal section filled with different items such as branded balls of wool and knitting needles. The surrounding wallpaper features knitting and crochet patterns and abstract feather shapes. Reupholstered machinist chairs feature as seating throughout the store, with spinning wheels, spools, owl statues and collections of branded buttons dress the eclectic space.

Awash with nostalgia and old-fashioned glamour, Ted’s Womenswear collection is a modern classic with a stylish palette of soft nudes and natural hues, deepened with rich chilli reds and lighter bottle greens. Whether you’re a man-about-town or a true country gent, Ted’s taken the express line to dapper and debonair for his Menswear collection. Mustards and muted teals sit alongside dark reds and purples to deliver an essential collection that puts the ‘aah’ into suave. For the perfect platform to leave a lasting impression, take the scenic route with Ted this AW13: striking colours, breath-taking prints and dramatic fabrics combine to create a stylishly modern collection designed to make you stop in your tracks.
