Not one to blend into the background, Ted’s collections become literal works of art this season. Rich prints, sharp silhouettes, a palette of paint-box brights and bold brushstrokes in the form of textural and tonal highlights are at the very heart of Spring/Summer 2012. Add to that Ted’s unwavering attention to detail and you have a collection that’s sure to be a real talking point and worthy of a walking exhibit.

Womenswear celebrates the female form with defined waists, full skirts and cut away detailing. Flower power reigns supreme with English roses, peonies and cherry blossom in full bloom on feminine 50s dress shapes. The Rosebug print featuring bright roses, bugs and butterflies is key and appears on everything from cropped jackets to shorts and from peep-toe heels to clutches. The floral theme continues with laser cut appliqué and intricate floral cutwork adding interest to dresses, tops and flirty shorts.

In contrast a more structured silhouette emerges with pleated maxi dresses flowing in vivid pops of colour. Clean lines are colour-blocked and played out in a modern minimal palette of blood orange, dove grey, ivory and black. Tailoring details are evident on jumpsuits, simple shifts and soft separates whilst origami folds, lace trims and pleating add structure.

Accessorise with towering cork wedges, wooden flatforms, oversized or mini box clutches in raffia and a stack of bangles.

In a way, Ted’s menswear collection is like a self-portrait, capturing all the elements of his personality. Larger than life, it’s bursting with vivid colour and detail, offering a bright and breezy take on riviera dressing. Chinos in slim and classic fits come in a rainbow of brights and earthy shades such as burnt orange, forest green and rustic red with contrast turn up detailing. Pastel and check chino shorts are worn with nautical stripe tees and polos with slim collars. Prints come through in the form of subtle polka dots and paisley trims on shirts and polos. Layer up with ribbed and fine weave summer knits.

Outerwear continues the seafaring theme with canvas and wax coated lightweight jackets appearing in colour blocked brights or navy. Rope button holes and loops, wooden toggles and rustic coconut buttons add further texture. For a fresh take on summer tailoring, double breasted and single breasted cotton blazers are worn with matching slim fit cotton trousers and deckchair stripe shirts.

The collection is finished with canvas duffle bags and shoppers, paisley and spotty neckerchiefs and bright suede deck shoes or brogues.

The winner of this year’s VQ Valentine’s Competition was Serena Dawe, who scooped £300 in VQ Shopping Vouchers ensuring she and her partner will have a real day to remember.

Serena, who works in the city as a solicitor said, “This was such a surprise. I regularly enter VQ competitions but this is the first time I’ve ever won one. I’ll certainly keep entering VQ competitions now!”

The Valentine’s competiton was run via the VQ website and could also be entered by scanning QR codes situated around the centre, and received over 1,000 entries. Perhaps the most requested product in our history is finally here. The Oliver Sweeney golf shoe has been built upon our popular Custom Grade last; a classic shape associated with the British Gent and all that accompanies him. With a string of admirers of our formal footwear from the world of golf, such as Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, it seemed a natural step.

A Goodyear welted construction, the uppers are created from a high performance waterproof leather from the British tannery, Pittards; world renowned for their expertise in this area. Not to let the side, or the bottom down, we’ve partnered with world leaders in performance soles, Claytons of Chesterfield, and opted for the equally impressive TanFlex waterproof sole leather.

And how do we know these all fit together to form a great golf shoe? Well, we know a few golfers who have done us the favour of giving them a go on the fairways, and they gave them the thumbs up for performance. We’ll let you judge their good looks.

And just in case you need any more convincing that these are the golf shoes for you, we added two sets of removable cleats; one dry, one wet. Unfortunately, we won’t be including a caddy in the shoe box. We’ve got to stop somewhere.

Pole Position

Leeds’ premier shopping destination, VQ is sponsoring intrepid adventurer Geoff Major in his attempt to raise £100,000 for local charities by trekking to the North Pole.

Geoff will celebrate his 50th birthday with what is arguably the challenge of a lifetime and will follow in the footsteps of legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, one of a small elite to reach the North Pole on foot.

Geoff, the founder of the BlueDucks consultancy, cycled hundreds of miles across Cuba for another charity challenge in 2010, but admits he’ll have his work cut out achieving the levels of fitness that will be needed to endure the arduous trek to the Pole.

“Cuba was a fantastic experience which really inspired me to do something much more challenging,” he commented.” I decided to try to combine as much fundraising as I could because I’m unlikely to have the time to do anything else on such a big scale. I don’t know how to ski at the moment let alone also pull a sled of supplies, but I’ll give it my best shot!”

To help ready himself for the challenge, Geoff has already enlisted the help of a personal trainer to get him super fit in time for April when he’s scheduled to begin the trek. In October last year he underwent survival training on Dartmoor and in March this year he’s spending a week in Norway to further acclimatise to the harsh conditions he’ll face at the North Pole.

In between times, he’s dragging two car tyres around his local park to get used to the weight if his sled.

And he’ll need to draw on all his reserves. The sea ice at the Pole is uneven and unpredictable and temperatures can plummet to a bone-numbing -35⁰C. Geoff hopes to complete the trek in 9 days and nights, averaging 9 miles a day.

The event is organised by Charity Challenge, which works with major organisations including Comic Relief. Its Managing Director, Simon Albert said, “It’s difficult to explain just how hard this challenge will be for Geoff. The risks include frostbite, polar bears, thin ice and temperatures of between -10⁰C and -35⁰C.”

Victoria Quarter is one of a number of local companies supporting the challenge. VQ Centre Director, John Bade commented, “This is a hugely impressive challenge, even more so given that Geoff will be 50 at the time. With Geoff coming from Leeds it makes our support all the more appropriate. I wish him every success with the trek and hope he achieves the twin goals of reaching the Pole and raising his target sum of £100,000.”

Yorkshire-based charities to benefit from the expedition will include MacMillan Cancer Care, Help for Heroes, The Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Yorkshire Cancer Research and The Samaritans.

One Night Only Play It With Style

When it comes to music and style, hitting the right note is an art in itself - Elvis stepped out in blue suede shoes, Bolan boogied in a boa, Hendrix created Purple Haze, and Prince preened through his purple phase.

Fast forward a few decades and North Yorkshire’s Indie band One Night Only are not only rocking the sound of a new generation but fashioning a look that’s a style of their own.

From vintage to VQ, there’s no style counselling needed.

Carolyn Nicoll caught up with the band’s George Craig (vocals/guitar) and brother James Craig (drums) on a musical route through modelling shoots, Michelsberg suits and must have boots…………

What are One Night Only up to at the moment?

J: We’re in and out of the studio working on our third album that’s set for release this summer, with a single due out in the spring, and we’re about to head off to Brazil for Fashion Week, we’re involved in a couple of shows out there.

G: The band’s also working with Burberry and we’re premiering our next single in the Burberry Aviator eyewear campaign, it’ll feature an acoustic version of the track.

I’m also involved with Clublad in London, every month we feature new bands and artists, and I DJ at the events. It’s a great way to support new musical talent.

And your future plans?

G&J: We have a UK tour planned, starting in April.

You got your big fashion break through the band.

G: Designer and Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey saw the video for Just For Tonight and called me in. I tried on some suits and didn’t really know what was going on, but then I got a call to ask me to model for the brand. Talk about a big break. It opened so many doors and I’ve met some great people. Burberry’s a real part of my look and they’re so savvy when it comes to music, it’s brilliant to be part of it. The team at Burberry are all so friendly and funny. It was an amazing privilege.

You worked with Harry Potter actress Emma Watson on the Burberry s/s 2010 campaign?

G: Yes, we got to hang out together quite a bit that summer.

Emma appeared in the band’s ‘Say You Don’t Want It’ video from the second album One Night Only.

G: It was a lot of fun filmed in the fabulous city of New York, shot over 2 days, with just the one camera and jumping in and out of a van to get to different locations. It went down a storm on the internet. (Over 5 million views!)

You also got to work with legendary photographer Mario Testino on the Burberry campaign?

G: It was brilliant working with Mario Testino and he said that he liked working with me!!!!! It was such a special time on that shoot and the photographs that he took are amazing. I also did a couple of catwalk shows for Burberry and that was so scary. I’ve played on stage to over 50,000 people but the catwalk experience was completely nerve-racking.

Do you have any more plans to model?

G: One Night Only’s my main thing but I’m always more than happy to work with Burberry.

James do you fancy following in George’s modelling footsteps?

J: (Laughs) I’m not sure I’ve got the face for it, but the whole band are involved in the latest Burberry shoot for their sunglasses range, so that’s brilliant news.

George, you were spotted at London Fashion Week. What did you get up to?

G: I probably went to more parties than actual shows. There were a lot of drinks served! Of course, I did go to the fantastic Burberry show.

London Fashion Week’s great, it’s an excellent opportunity to dress up and show ‘your wardrobe’. I think I might rock my James Michelsberg suit from Michelsberg Tailoring at the next fashion week!

Michelsberg Tailoring at The Victoria Quarter is a family favourite?

J: I was shopping with Mum at the VQ and we popped in to the Jeffery West store for some boots, the manager had on an amazing bright red waistcoat and it was like WOW!!!!! He told us that James Michelsberg had made it for him, so we had to nip around the corner immediately to chat to James about his tailoring.

G: We sent Dad to have a suit made for his birthday and it was so fabulous that James and I decided we had to have one too.

Describe your Michelsberg suits.

G: Mine is a wintry, fine wool material, with grey and white stripes, a little 60s gangster crossed with The Who’s Roger Daltrey look. The lining’s an acidic yellow silk. It’s soft, it’s slick and it’s cut close to the body, which is exactly as I wanted it. I love it!

J: I went for a fine, electric blue suit with black stitching and chocolate brown velvet detailing on the collar and cuffs. There’s a very thin, subtle brown velvet trim on the pockets and the lining is bright white, so a great contrast. It’s fantastic!

How did you find the tailoring experience?

G: I got involved with the design. James Michelsberg is a fantastic tailor, excellent at what he does with amazing attention to detail. I went to see him with some 60s rock ‘n’ roll reference photos. He’s so creative and the whole experience was such a pleasure. James’ is a really nice guy to be with.

J: I agree, it was brilliant getting involved with the design, chatting about the style, colours, textures, linings and fabrics, plus having something created that’s so well made, and exactly as we wanted. It was an incredible experience to see the progress of the process. James (Michelsberg) is such good company and we had a real laugh. James is a good friend now and he came along to our Leeds gig.

G: When I’m wealthy enough I’m going to go to Michelsberg Tailoring every 6 months to get a suit made!!!!

Where do you love to shop?

G & J: We try not to wear what everyone else is wearing, so vintage stores in Soho and Camden Market in London are great for some lovely pieces.

Where do you shop in Leeds?

G: Jeffery West at the VQ for their excellent boots and great service. I think if you buy quality it shows and Jeffery West boots are so well made, with so many unique designs. I love the detail. I have a brogue style pair of Chelsea boots and some with a purple snakeskin vibe. People are always really complimentary about them when I wear them.

J: I go to Harvey Nichols at The Victoria Quarter. I love mad shirts, anything with a really interesting pattern, something a bit different. Like George, Jeffery West is also a must for boots. I have a couple of pairs that I wear all the time, such slick designs that fit in with my style. I have a pair that are black and a striking red colour, unique and sassy. I like to get pieces from the Blue Rinse vintage store in the city as well.

Which designers do you like?

G: I love Burberry, as well as Alexander McQueen, and I like to pop into Liberty when I’m in London.

J: I REALLY love Paul Smith shirts. I can always find a crazy shirt that fits perfectly at the VQ store. I open my wardrobe and it’s always a Paul Smith shirt that I go for. They’re different.

How would you describe your style?

G: A bit 60s, a bit mod. I like things that have a tailored fit and are slick. Pieces that are sharp, sometimes quite dazzling and a bit loud. I like to look different. Skinny jeans are a big part of my wardrobe. My style is VERY BRITISH, I like the iconic trench coats and Chelsea boots.

J: I have a thing for shirts that are a bit 60s psychedelic. It’s good to have a look that’s unique and I love to find a great vintage piece. As a band, we all wear Burberry black skinny jeans, but the top half is up to us and certainly reflects our individual tastes.

What’s been the best bit about being in One Night Only?

G: Doing gigs I never thought I’d do, having such amazing fans – people that we saw at gigs 6 years ago who are still coming along, they’re real music lovers, and the links to so many different things – working with Burberry, the Coca Cola campaign (2011), and visiting every continent.

J: Being with friends and doing a job that isn’t a job. Spending time in the studio’s great, but nothing compares to looking out and seeing the enjoyment on all the faces when playing live.

What would you get up to on a typical ‘free’ day?

G: Seeing friends, having a nice meal somewhere with a good bottle of red wine, going on the X Box, playing guitar, listening to records, normal things.

J: Having a laugh with friends, a meal and probably a few cocktails. I’m also really getting into good live comedy. I went to the Comedy Store recently, I loved it and want to see more.

What is your ultimate goal?

G: To release One Night Only’s next single, to have another top ten would be great, also to do an arena tour would be incredible……and to be a success in the USA!

J: To carry on, make amazing records and keep trying to make better albums. Everyone in the band has the same goal, to strive to make albums that are more progressive and even better than the one before. To keep building on what we’ve done. Some bands have a great first album and then blow it away, that’s it, they get worse. With One Night Only we feel as a band that we have the potential to grow and grow, and get better. I’m really excited about the new stuff we’re working on. It would also be great to play some big arenas.

How would you sum up your life at the moment?

G: Pretty sweet!

J: Exciting!

This time last year Leeds student Sophie Andrews decided to enter Hawes & Curtis’ ‘Design A Shirt’ competition, but little did she know just how much it would change her life. Not only did Sophie triumph over some truly impressive opposition to take the prestigious, winning title, but she went on to be offered a much coveted position as a designer with the highly creative brand.

‘While I was studying Fashion at Leeds College of Art, I was given the opportunity to take part in the competition for Hawes & Curtis”, enthuses Sophie. “The brief was to design a shirt that would sit with their existing collection. All the entries looked very strong so I was delighted to win!”

Sophie’s stunning Victorian inspired satin creation, with impressive button detail was then made in to 100 shirts and sold in store as part of Hawes & Curtis’ spring/summer collection. An incredible opportunity, that didn’t stop there.

“Part of the prize was a 2 week work placement at Hawes & Curtis’ Head Office”, Sophie explains. “I was given the chance to experience all parts of the business from Fit Sessions to Print Design, and from Fabric Ordering to liaising with the Turkey office.”

It wasn’t only Sophie’s winning design that caught the attention of the team at Hawes & Curtis, but as a direct result of her impressive approach to the work placement, Sophie was then offered a permanent place on the design team.

“It was a fantastic placement at Hawes & Curtis and I was ecstatic to then be offered a full time role, which in the current economic climate I feel very lucky to have obtained!” say Hawes & Curtis Designer Sophie. “The competition was a brilliant experience, and turned out to be the beginning of my career, which I will always be grateful for.”

Fashion’s fast track continues for Sophie who works on all Hawes & Curtis’ accounts, including not only shirt design for the brand but working with the companies other high profile businesses including Marks and Spencer and their Per Una line. As a designer Sophie continues to be involved in design and print designing, fabric selection, and sample production.

This is your chance to learn the art of mixology in a one hour session with a Harvey Nichols’ cocktail expert!

The HN Master Classes will give you the chance to discover the basic principles of creating cocktails and how to balance flavours. You will be shown how to make four classic cocktails as well as getting the chance to taste them. It will then be over to you, for a hands-on session where you can create your own fabulous cocktail.

Master Classes cost £25 per person and include a one hour session on cocktail making. Alternatively you can treat yourself to a truly indulgent Harvey Nichols’ package, which includes a delicious three course lunch or dinner in the Fourth Floor Café and the Master Class cocktail for £50 per person.

Isle Of Man Olympic Stamp Collection by Paul Smith

Paul Smith has collaborated with the Isle of Man Post Office to design a prestigious collection of seven stamps to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As a lifelong follower of the World Cycling, Paul Smith was honoured to be asked to participate in this project by the Isle of Man Post Office. The island is home to heroic Olympic Cyclist, and good friend of Paul Smith, Mark Cavendish. Mark will start as one of the favourites in the Men's Road Race, which has been chosen as the first Cycling event at the Games. The starting line on the Mall, with Buckingham Palace as the backdrop will surely be an inspiration to the Team GB cycling team. It is estimated the race will attract the single biggest crowd of the Games, with an estimated 2 million people anticipated to line the 156 Mile course.

The Paul Smith Isle of Man stamps will be officially released on 1st January 2012 and will be available to buy from Paul Smith shops globally.
